Recipe of the Week: Homemade Green Powder

Hello again everyone!

Forgive me if I haven't been around much lately. I've been pouring most of my energy into my latest book project, hoping it will be ready to 'be born' sometime next month.

The local landscape sure has changed quickly in the last couple of weeks or so. Leaves have begun to change color and the sun is getting noticeably lower in the sky. There's no denying it anymore; Autumn is now here to stay. *sigh*

I discover more empty plant beds every time I go to the garden; their offerings having turned to seeds or been harvested. At least the hardier greens are loving this cooler weather; they are absolutely thriving! As there is more kale and swiss chard than can be humanly consumed fresh, someone suggested dehydrating them. What a brilliant idea!

This is probably the easiest Recipe of the Week that I've ever posted, but I couldn't resist passing on this awesome way to make use of the overabundance of greens in your gardens. Making your own green powder is not only super easy, but is also very economical! Plus, you know for sure that it is raw!

Homemade Green Powder
Whatever greens you have on hand, washed and de-stemmed.

1. Place on mesh screens and dehydrate until completely dry.

2. Grind into a powder in a high-speed blender or food processor.

3. Store into an airtight container and keep in a cool and dark place.

And voila! Enjoy in your favorite fruit smoothies!

  1. Homemade green powder, brilliant! I have never thought of this, but how simple and nice to have around. And probably tastes a lot better than the spendy stuff I've been buying at the store.

I love the changing of the seasons, everything feels so fresh and new. Best of luck finishing up your latest book :)

  3. Never would have thought of making this; thank you for the idea. I too am sighing about Autumn settling in, but only because the icy winter is not far behind!

  4. Thanks for this easy recipe Carmella. I wouldn't have thought of this, but I sure do pay a premium for green powders at the store.

    Be well,
    Carolyn

  5. Love this idea, but have one problem - no dehydrator!

I had purchased one last summer, then returned it because I didn't think I would get enough use out of it.

Can this be done in the oven w/out losing the nutrients?

  7. Howdy everyone! *waving*

I know! It never dawned on me either until this summer! I love it!

    Stormy,
I bet you could let the greens dry out in the sun or even in a warm place in the house. Or what about if you were to put the greens in a paper bag, much like we do for drying herbs?

You could also do it in the oven I guess, but you'd have to be very careful not to overheat the greens. I think the ideal would be to leave them in the oven with the light bulb on. It should do the trick!

Hope one of those ideas work out!

  8. Thanks for the glowing inspiration. This is something dope to do with wild greens. Go around and harvest all your electric, nutrient dense wild greens before they keel over to the awesome might of winter, then dry and powder them into somethin' crazyrevitalizin'.

  12. Denise,
I think it should keep for months in a cool, dry place. Even longer if you refrigerate it.

    Enjoy!
